If you have had time to watch Nicola's TEDx talk that I mentioned last time you'll recall she talks about the alarming scenes of childbirth that younger generations are exposed to - Twilight and Waking the Dead in particular.
Watching episode 2 of Life in Squares today I was struck by the birth scene.........
In the kitchen, a midwife potters around the stove, a bemused and slightly alarmed young man reads aloud and Vanessa is seen firstly walking around the kitchen table and then as birth gets closer she drops to the ground, roaring and yelling, grabbing hold of the bemused young mans hand. A primal desperation taking over her body as she pushes new life into the world.
As a Doula there were parts of this story that I recognise from every birth I've attended. The determination, the noise - guttural and primal, as labour progresses women getting closer and closer to the ground, birth supporters feeling both useless and invaluable.
I'm curious - what's your favourite fictional or factual birth scene on television or film?
